Zettle is a payment processor which comes with free basic POS software called Zettle Go. The software is generic and equally suitable for merchants of all kinds. (Zettle also have a premium offering called Zettle Pro). Compare with Square which has the same business model.

What makes it different from Square?

Truthfully, not that much. We work more closely with Zettle – but either choice is great if you’re looking for a simple system. If you’re looking to grow in the future, Zettle integrates with a larger number of sophisticated POS apps – including its premium option.


As it’s a payment processor, Zettle needs its own brand card reader. All the hardware listed here should work. The Zettle POS system is an app which can download onto an iPad, iPhone, or Android device. Zettle has a really big range of integrations including most POS if you’re just interested in payments.

The 2020 iZettle Review

iZettle Go is a great choice for merchants – probably the best if you have a lower than £10 average transaction fee or you have a lower than £8-10K turnover. It matches top free EPOS software with cheap payment processing and low hardware costs. iZettle’s huge number of integrations make it perfect for merchants who plan to grow – it gives you lots of options as you get bigger.

What is iZettle?

iZettle is part of a new generation of EPOS and payment solutions – they do both your EPOS software and your payment processing. (although you could use iZettle only for payment processing, alongside another EPOS). iZettle is among the easiest EPOS systems to set up. iZettle has basic EPOS software – it’s great for free software, but it has fewer functions than some of the options which charge. Lots of EPOS software designed for bigger stores can integrate with iZettle Go. So you could use these EPOS software as your till software, and iZettle as the payment provider only.

Who is iZettle for?

Businesses with card revenues of  8-10k per month or less; and Businesses with low average transaction values (less than £10): e.g. iZettle can be a great option for a chain of coffee shops turning over £10m per annum with average transactions of £5. Ask us for help to figure this out!

iZettle contract and costs

There’s no contract, no minimum monthly fee and you’ll pay commissions as you go: you can start and stop accepting cards whenever you like. iZettle charges 1.75% or less of every transaction. If you know how, it’s possible to negotiate a lower fee. iZettle pays your money NET: the commission is taken before the money enters your account, so there is no need for a direct debit. The remittance to your account takes 2 working days. So if you take money on Thursday, you’re getting it on Monday. This is standard in payments.

The devil’s details

– An iZettle card reader needs to be paired (bluetooth-connected) to a phone or tablet in order to function. It’s as easy as connecting your phone to an audio speaker.

– iZettle card reader can’t print receipts, but you can purchase a separate printer through our website. You can also just send your receipts via email, from the iZettle app.

– For iZettle to authorise transactions, the phone or tablet paired with the iZettle card reader must be connected to the internet – either through a SIM (2G/3G/4G) or WiFi. 

– iZettle accepts all card types including foreign cards, Amex, and all contactless payments (Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay etc.) – at no extra cost. 

– The iZettle card reader is sleek and takes no counter space.

Setting up and using iZettle Go

1) Sign up for iZettle  through StoreKit

This means we can check you’re good to go and get you on a cheaper rate. It takes 10 minutes and we can even discount a card reader when you buy through us. 

2) Make sure you’ve got your hardware 

To download an app you need a tablet or smartphone. Most will work – but check our quick hardware guide for extra advice. You’ll also need the iZettle card readerUnlike other card readers, the iZettle card reader does not print receipts, so you may also need to buy a receipt printer.

And that’s it! Anything else is extra: barcode scanner, barcode printer, cash drawer, or a kitchen printer if you send food tickets to chefs, and maybe a stand for your tablet. All can be bought from our website, but are not essential for taking payments and registering transactions. Give us a call to get help on choosing the right equipment! 3) Download the app

Download the app onto your chosen EPOS tablet or smartphone. (You can download the same account to multiple devices.) Or, log in online to view your back office.

The set-up for iZettle is really quick. I downloaded iZettle onto my (Android) smartphone to show you the next steps. The information you’ll need is:

Company Info – company name & number, address

Turnover details – estimated avg transaction size & volume

Personal details – name, phone, DOB

Bank Account – this needs to be your company’s bank account or it won’t work

And then you’re done. You also have to connect your card during this process. That works by bluetooth via a pairing process. 

Using the app for your EPOS

After a quick sign up, it’s easy to start using the iZettle app to sell things. You can view the buttons which represent different products, and when you take the goods to the basket, it will cue the price of the basket on the card reader, ready for the customer to pay.

There are folders – (e.g. “sandwiches”)  products – (e.g. “tasty bacon”) and variables – (e.g. normal/large) 

After you’ve paired your card reader to your account, simply tap the product that the customer selects and the price will display on the reader. Then, when they tap their card against it – voila! The money will be deposited in your account in set intervals (control this via settings on your iZettle log-in). 

It’s easy enough to manually add items in this view – you can toggle an “edit” mode and write out the name, product variants, and more – but it’s time intensive. If you have a large stock, you can import a .csv file via your log in. 


Using iZettle Back Office

iZettle’s “back office” can be logged into via a computer, and gives the user a variety of ways to better understand their business.

The views are:

This is designed to give you a snapshot of your business (screenshot below). You can see it shows you how much you’re selling over time, and whether your card sales are growing month on month. There’s a cursory look at some top stats – including whether you have people returning with the same cards. 

Where it says “integrate with Xero” meaning there’s a free integration available – you can hit a couple of buttons and a lever pulled in one changes the other.

Sales has three sub-views – invoices, account statement, and receipts

  • Receipts is designed to show you every individual cash transaction done using iZettle. If somebody wants to return their item, you can use the receipt number to find – then, it will show you the specific receipt. You can see this below – it gives you the option to refund it and shows you the full order details.
  • Account Statement shows you every transaction again – this time in an exportable format so you can analyse it using excel. Remember, if you have Xero software, you should connect and do this bit over on Xero. 
  • Invoices is designed to show you whether you have any unpaid invoices you need to chase up. You can issue invoices too, which are processed through iZettle at 2.5%.

Reports shows you two things – first, how much you’ve paid in iZettle’s payment fees (many competitors we could name don’t do this) and second, how much you’re processing. This is pretty basic compared to the more sophisticated software on the market – but for free software, it’s good. 


iZettle Products

This is an important page. It has two tabs.

  • Product is where you can mass-import new products from an excel file via this method. You can also delete old products.
  • Inventory enables you to track your inventory – i.e. you can enter how many of each item in each stock for each kind of item, and when somebody buys an item it will deduct from your stock.

Funding & E-Commerce

In the funding tab, iZettle offers a loan – which is based on your processing history data. It’s an alternative model to normal loans: it doesn’t use “interest” as a percent of outstanding owed money, rather it stipulates the cost of the loan on day 1 and then takes its money back based on how much you process in each month.

The e-commerce iZettle site costs £29 per month. E-commerce platforms can get expensive when you start to sell a lot, so this is cheap and basic. 

Menu Bar

This is the bar of smaller tabs which couldn’t be fit overhead. They include: 

  • Staff – this invites you to add staff to the account, which is done via email. They can then sign in via their own address. Then, you can distinguish between how much they’re selling. Is Lisa outdoing John in upselling the soup of the day? 
  • Customers – this gives you a choice to create an email list of customers, which works a little like MailChimp. Typical of iZettle’s large number of integrations, you can also add MailChimp to your account via that link and merge your two lists. 
  • Settings – you can control how and when they send you your money here. You may also want to set up any non-default features. For example, iZettle has a “repeat payment” feature for merchants needing to take lots and lots of payments of a set amount rapidly. 
  • Hardware – they will try to sell you hardware here. Remember, it’s cheaper through StoreKit! 


These are just some software brands which can plug into an iZettle reader – (metaphorically. You can use Bluetooth IRL)

Remember, iZettle is two things – software, and payments.

iZettle  payments is the most widely-integrated payment option on the shelf. If you’re taking your first step setting-up, and you’re not sure which EPOS software you want – that makes this a great choice. Think of it as room to grow. As you get bigger, and your EPOS needs get more sophisticated, you can continue to use iZettle payments when you graduate out of iZettle software. 

iZettle EPOS software is integrated with a few different software types – including accounting software and e-commerce software. To integrate their accounting partner, Xero, go to iZettle’s “overview” page. For other integrations, there should be a choice to integrate with iZettle when you’re setting up payments through that software. 

iZettle also have their own offerings both in premium EPOS and e-commerce. Their e-comm platform starts at £29/month and their premium EPOS costs £39/month per till.

TLDR: iZettle is the best integrated payments processor around. If you want to grow, you’ll want a bigger and better EPOS system and you can continue to use iZettle for payments. If you have an online store there’s usually a plug-in available but this is mainly useful for stock syncing. 


iZettle’s EPOS software is free. Obviously, this makes them great value.

iZettle charges a flat 1.75% rate on payments which will normally be more expensive than an “acquirer” like worldpay, depending on your circumstances. But here’s our big secret on payments: if you know how, iZettle will negotiate with you. We have a professional arm-twister working in house – so we know how to get a discounted rate through iZettle. 

An acquirer would charge an interchange + + rate. The interchange varies by card type, and includes a “+ 3p” component. That means whether or not this will be cheaper for you depends on multiple factors. 

If you’re not sure, email hello@storekit.com and ask for advice on the cheapest payment provider. We’ll do some maths (which it’s difficult to do yourself) – for example, we’ll estimate the rate you would be able to negotiate in interchange + + format based on your transaction size, volume, and foreign card intake – and work out whether it’s cheaper.

(A final note is that iZettle does have transaction limits – of £200,000 per day. But if you’re processing that much, iZettle is not the cheapest and you should not be using them.)

TLDR: iZettle is amongst the cheapest for transactions, especially below £6K per month. It’s possible to negotiate them to lower than their 1.75% rate. A fixed rate means that billing is simpler, and there’s no contract. Contact StoreKit to see if you could get a discount. 


An EPOS system is so important to your business that when it goes down, you go down. That’s why we put an emphasis on how well protected the customer is.

We’d say you’re quite well protected through iZettle. Here’s our thinking:

  • There’s no contract. If worst comes to the worst, and you want to cease your relationship with iZettle, you simply stop processing through them.
  • Support is available working hours on weekdays. This isn’t as good as some of the paid EPOS software, who make a support team available 24/7 – but for free software, it’s mid-range. Our customers have found customer service at iZettle more helpful than some other companies. 
  • You don’t have to pay for upgrades. Everything we sell on this website is “software as a service” (you pay monthly) – that means that it automatically updates and you don’t get software which breaks down because it’s too old and gerriatric. 
  • The hardware comes with a warranty. Which is nice. What warranty depends on what hardware you’re buying – their card readers’ warranty is good for one year. Check the Ts&Cs on our website before you buy. If you’re setting up for the first time, we always advise that you get your EPOS system well in advance

If you’re considering iZettle, you might be looking at “two-in-one solutions”. That means companies that do payment processing and EPOS software – or you might just be looking at payments.

These two-in-one solutions all work in the same way when it comes to payments. They have a fixed rate of around 1.75%, they include basic EPOS (or you can choose to integrate high-end EPOS) and they come with their own card reader. The competitor cheat-sheet here only shows two-in-one solutions. 

If you’re not sure whether a two-in-one solution is right for you, book a call and we can talk you through why you might want one. Tell us you’re thinking of going for a “payment facilitator” and you want to know whether it’s the cheapest option. The other option is called an acquirer.

  • Acquirers (Worldpay & others) 

Upsides: can be cheaper in some circumstances (high processing volumes, high average transaction size, few foreign cards).

Downsides: acquirers are much more expensive on the flipside (lower volumes, lower average transaction size, lots of foreign cards). Plus, there’s a contract involved – usually a couple of years – and they take about a week to set up. 

Two competitors are head and shoulders above the others here – Square and iZettle have superior software to Sum Up and PayPal Here. That’s based on the level of functionality and the ease of use. PayPal is the most expensive and the least usable – so we’ll take you through SumUp and Square.

  • Square

Upsides: looks great, and the EPOS is pretty good 

Downsides: doesn’t accept Chinese or Japanese cards, and fewer integrations with better EPOS software. 

  • SumUp

Upsides: it starts at the cheapest rate, can be used abroad

Downsides: very basic EPOS, and becomes uncompetitive pretty quickly as you grow.

Quick Hardware Guide

If you need a full iZettle EPOS system, try building a whole kit for a complete one-stop shop. But the cheapest way you can get everything working is to buy a card reader, a receipt printer, and your own device.

For a full iZettle EPOS system, which we recommend for tills, you need:

An Android or Apple device. 

By device, we basically mean hardware which can download an app. That’s an iPad, iPhone, Android Tablet, or Android Phone. That means Windows and Huawei phones are not supported. 

(Not sure what your device is? Samsung, Nokia, LG, and Moto tend to use Android – but you can double check by looking for “Google Play Store” in your apps. If it’s there, you use Android.

For this, we sell iPads. We price-match with Apple on these. But remember, if you’re a market stand, you want to choose an iPad which supports a SIM. That means it will have internet available – which the payment processing requires to work. Browse iPads 

A Card Reader

iZettle requires its own card reader. It’s sleek and white. Modern. Ergonomic.

iZettle recently launched a new card reader, iZettle card reader 2. To you or me, it’s the same as the iZettle card reader 1 and there’s no need to upgrade. It does have a green button, though, and there are some superficial differences – the on/off button is less flimsy.

A Receipt Printer

iZettle card readers do not print receipts (although they can email/text receipts if you take the relevant info from your customer) – so you need to buy one. You have four choices:

USB Apple/Android – Remember, the difference is more than just cables – they will not work with the wrong operating system.

USBs are generally the cheapest and most restrictive kind of receipt printer. It needs to be plugged in to the tablet, meaning that both your tablet and your printer are stuck where they are – so it’s a good choice if you have fixed tills. You can find a USB receipt printer for Apple tablet here and for Android here. You’ll need an extra OTG adapter for android. Browse

Ethernet – this one works via the internet. The printer needs to be plugged into your WiFi router (via an ethernet cable, included), but you can take the iPad wherever you like – for example, to a table in your restaurant. You can also attach multiple printers to one device with these – so you can print a little here, print a little there – and see how you go. Browse

Bluetooth – this is wireless as far as the connection goes, but it still needs plugging into the wall. If you have a market stand, and you don’t have a router but a SIM, this is the printer you need. It’s the most expensive of the three. It’s also one device per printer, and vice versa. Browse

You also need to get thermal paper till rolls which are very cheap.

A Cash Drawer

These are pretty fungible and do what they say on the tin. Cash draws come with OTG cables which plug in to any receipt printer if you want them to open automatically when someone makes a purchase. Browse

Kitchen Printers 

These are for when you have a kitchen, and you want to send tickets to it. Now, you can use (cheaper) receipt printers for this, but they use something called “thermal paper” which blackens when it gets hot. Kitchen Printers use ink and normal paper, are designed for hot environments, and to be heard among the kitchen din. Browse
